Last night I had sort of a "despair" moment when I started to think about how small we humans are in this universe. What can one human do, that could have an effect. Nothing that would affect the universe, planets are bound to orbit stars, electrons orbit protons and neutrons and we wonder on our life. It might be that there is dublicate of us in the universe, inflation theory supports this, because our universe is arbitery large. There can be only so many ways matter to arrange and compose, therefor in a nearly infinite space there must be exact copy of us or things might bee a lot gloomier, nothing is out there, no intelligent life, nothing. This might be it, we are alone.
I started to feel real small, consider the distances and scale of things in space. They are unimaginable. Human brain can not comprehend the size of voids and clusters in the cosmIos. Distance to our nearest star is 150 000 000 000 kilometers, second closest star is light years away, light travels at the speed of 300 000 km/s so from Sun to Earth light takes about 150 000 000/300 000 000=500s/60=8,33 minutes to reach us. From Alpha Centauri 4.24 lightyears away so 4.24 ly * 10^16 km = 424 000 000 000 000 0000 km away from Earth and obviously light takes 4.24 years to reach us. Distant known galaxy is 13.1 billion light years away, age of the universe is estimated to be 13.75 billion years... Also it seems that I have miniature black hole in my wallet:D and how come something you care about can be so near yet so far, that it could be in another galaxy for that matter.
What do you think?
What do you think?
Black holes in wallets seem to be a common thing, my wallet has one too :D I've found it best not to think too much about the smallness of humans.. It's just depressing. At least we can affect our own lives, which is enough for me :)
ReplyDeleteSomehow the size of the universe is calming, in a sense. After the Sun dies, Billions of years in the future, the atoms that used to be me are part of a new star or planet... Cooler still! Even part of new form of life:) but the fact is that, we are small spects of matter compared to the mechanics that is the know universe... The paradigm of controlling ones own destiny is sort of neurological delusion to keep us from loosing our mind. Then again, oblivion is nice:D
